Moisture Meter Guide
There are many methods of gaining soil moisture measurement. Direct measurements involve taking water from the soil by evaporation, chemical reaction or leaching. The content of moisture in the soil is then calculated by the mass of water removed from the soil in comparisson to the mass of dry soil. Indirect measurements of soil moisture content involve the testing of some of the properties of the soil which are affected by water content. With an indirect method an object is usually placed in the soil. This object will be a porous absorber that will reach water equilibrium within the soil.
Because the relationship between physical and chemical soil properties and that of soil water content are not understood that well it is necessary to also have indirect methods of obtaining water content of soil. Remote measuring of soil water content can be carried out with non contact methods and also measuring from distance. To remote test the water sensing is reliant upon the electromagnetic energy emitted from the surface of the soil. This energy in turn is affected by the wavelength region where the testing is taking place, the temperature of the soil and a combination of both.
Gravimetric Techniques Of Soil Water Content Testing
These techniques are based on the removal of any water from a sample of soil. The water can be removed by evaporation, a chemical reaction or leaching. This water sample is then used to calculate soil moisture content by its amount. There are several ways to determine the amount of water taken from the soil. The easiest method is that of weighing soil with the water and then weighing the soil after the water has been taken.
The most widely used gravimetric technique is that of oven drying. Here an augur or sampling tube is used. As well soil containers that have tight fitting lids are required and of course an oven to control the temperature. For extremely precise results a vacuum oven can be used. With the oven method the moisture content of the soil is based on the measurement of any water removed from the soil. For drying the soil the oven temperature will be 230 F and constantly maintained.
With stoney soils the results can prove to be misleading when it comes to mass and volume calculations. This is because rocks can take up a large volume of the soil and contribute greatly to the mass of the soil.
Scattering Of Neutrons
Using neutron scattering is an indirect method of obtaining soil moisture content. This method entails measuring neutron density or the thermal density.
There is a relationship between water content of soil and neutron thermalization. This is because hydrogen can decelerate any fast neutrons and water contains the highest source of hydrogen atoms in soil.
Fast neutrons are emitted into a soil and are slowed by collisions with atoms and become thermalized. When these fast neutrons enter soil which is moist, they will be surrounded by a cloud of thermal neutrons. The distance each neutron travels before it becomes thermalized can be used to ascertain the hydrogen content of the soil. This hydrogen level can then be calibrated against water concentration to give a soil water content measurement. For a more indepth review of neutron scattering as a test take a look at the neutron moisture meter.

A moisture meter proves itself to be a useful tool when testing the moisture content levels of boat materials. When assessing a boat, care, judgement and experience should all be employed and then the moisture meter used as the last tool to give the final assessment. It is possible to give a good
Any caravan that is kept open to the elements all year round can become very susceptible to damp and damp related problems if proper precautions are not taken to prevent this.
Damp can invade your caravan through damaged seals, poor plumbing and inadequate cleaning. Without treatment you will find yourself having real problems as both mold and mildew can flourish in a damp caravan.
