Moisture Meter Guide

Building Moisture Meter

Wood is always sensitive to moisture. It will absorb and release moisture until it is in an equilibrium state with the surrounding atmosphere it is in. Wood moisture contents are closely related to relative humidity and air temperature. For every wood moisture content there is a specific relative humidity and air temperature where wood will not gain or lose moisture content. This is the equilibrium moisture content (EMC).

When EMC has been reached in wood in a situation where the relative humidity and temperature do not change, the wood is stable and ideal conditions have been reached.

Wood will not shrink or swell in a state of EMC.

Using the chart above an examples of wood EMC can be worked out.

If the temperature of the air is 70 F and relative humidity is 75 % wood EMC = 14 %

If the temperature of the air is 70 F and relative humidity is 35 % wood EMC = 7 %

If the temperature of the air is 60 F and relative humidity is 35 % wood EMC = 7 %
