Bonsai Moisture Meter

When you check out the definition of bonsai in the Collins English Dictionary the description you get is “The art of growing dwarfed ornamental varieties of trees or shrubs in small shallow pots by selective pruning”. And additionally “A tree or shrub grown by this method”

There is quite a history behind bonsai growing. The word bonsai is made up of two syllables which mean “tray” and “pot”. Now when you say bonsai out aloud it has a Japanese sounding ring to it, but the characteristics of the word are Chinese. This is appropriate as bonsai growing actually originated in China, but it was the Japanese who refined the art of bonsai gardening and introduced bonsai growing to the Western World.  Meter for bonsai

Additional Information On The Rapitest 1827 Moisture Meter

Use this meter only in soil and do not place the probe in to any liquids. To use the 1825 moisture meter simply press the power button on. Then insert the probe vertically if you can, in to the pot where you wish to test the soil.

Ideally you want the probe to be halfway between the edge of the pot and the plant stem. Push the probe about half way down in to the pot and take a couple of readings to ensure a more accurate reading. When the readings show up on the LCD display, wait until the reading has been constant for about 4 seconds then note it. Take the probe out of the soil and wipe it clean and dry.

This moisture meter has been designed for test readings and should not be left in contact with moisture for an extended period of time. Do not leave this moisture meter permanently in the soil. The meter has an inbuilt power saving device and it will turn itself off after about 2 minutes of inactivity.

Tips

Small pots dry out quicker than larger pots. So you need to check your smaller pots more regularly.

Soil in clay pots will dry out quicker than soil in plastic pots. This is because baked clay is more porous.

Plants in direct sunlight will dry out a lot quicker and require more water than plants in shade.

Overwatering is a reference to frequency of watering and not quantity of water.

Cacti

These plants store water and do not require as much attention as other plants. Do not let the soil dry out from march to september. From october to february cacti are dormant and only need moderate watering once every 2/3 weeks.

Lawns

The worst thing you can do for your lawn is to water it too lightly. Light watering will not help the root system of your lawn and the roots will start to climb to the surface in the search for moisture. This will result in burning especially during very hot weather.

Gardens

Plants should not be allowed to dry out to their wilting point. Watering of plants should take place when your moisture meter test readings indicate that a specific plant requires water. When you do water you want to water sufficiently enough so that the roots get provided for. One has to always consider that different plants and vegetables have different watering needs. Once you have watered your plants you should check the soil moisture content again with your Rapitest moisture meter and should get a reading of 10 to show that you have watered enough. With soils that have bad drainage you should wait about 30 minutes before retesting to allow the water flow to take place.
