Because of its strength iron is a widely used material in many applications. However, iron loses this main characteristic the moment it starts to rust. A combination of oxygen and moisture is a sure catalyst for rust. In order to protect iron one has to remove either oxygen or moisture from the equation. So moisture control is paramount.

There are a couple of factors at work when you are attempting to control moisture levels. Relative humidity is how much moisture there is present in air and the more moisture there is in the air, the quicker iron will rust. It is more or less impossible for rust to form in a clean air that has a relative humidity of 45% or less. However as soon as the moisture percentage rises above 45% rust will become an issue. The temperature of the air and the actual iron itself are also factors in how and to what extent the moisture in the air will give rise to rust.

A moisture meter proves itself to be a useful tool when testing the moisture content levels of boat materials. When assessing a boat, care, judgement and experience should all be employed and then the moisture meter used as the last tool to give the final assessment.Test wood and fibreglass on boats

Rust

Rust is an iron oxide formed by the reaction of iron and oxygen in the presence of moisture. Over a period of time any iron mass will simply rust and disintegrate in the presence of oxygen and moisture. Rusting is the term used for any corrosion in iron and its alloys such as steel.

Oxidation Of Iron

Whenever impure iron comes in to contact with water and oxygen plus other oxidants it will rust. Saly presence in the moisture will make the iron rust even quicker. Iron is virtually unaffected by dry oxygen or pure water. There are other degrading solutions as well with iron. Sulphur dioxide and carbon dioxide in water will also have a ruinous affect on the metal.

Prevention Of Rust

Because of the widespread use of iron and steel a solution to rust and rust prevention is a huge business employing many specialized technologies. Rust is actually permeable to water and air which means the interior of metal beneath a layer of rust will continue to corrode. So to prevent rust coatings have to be used to combat rust formation.

Galvanization

Here zinc is used to provide a protective coating in a process of electroplating or hot dip galvanizing. Zinc is ideal because it is cheap, adheres well to steel and gives cathodic protection to the surface of the steel. Galvanization can fail at seams, holes and joints because gaps in the coating are left. Aluminium can also be added to the zinc in this process. This mix will provide protection for a longer period of time because the aluminium will migrate and cover scratches.

Cathodic Protection

This is a process used to protect against corrosionon buried or immersed structures. It applys an electrical charge that will suppress the electro chemical reaction that takes place. If this process is carried out correctly it will completely stop corrosion.

Paintings And Coatings

It is possible to control rust formation with coatings such as paint, varnish or lacquer. These coatings will isolate the iron from the environment. Such structures as ships and cars will have a wax based coatings sprayed in to their enclosed box sections. If you cover steel with concrete it can be protected a little because of the alkaline PH. The problem here though can be that rust can expand and fracture the concrete from within.

Bluing

This is a technique that gives a little limited resistance to rust. It is used for small steel items. In order for this technique to work properly a water displacing oil has to be rubbed on to the blued steel.

Inhibitors

Corrosion inhibitors can be used within sealed systems. However they become defunct when they are dispersed by air circulation and new supplies of oxygen and moisture are introduced.

Humidity Control

Rust can be prevented from forming if the moisture in the atmosphere is controlled. Silica gel packets are successful with this when stuff is shipped by sea.
